Global technology incubator to follow this summer
Congratulations to Mercedes-Benz and the city of Sandy Springs, GA on the grand opening of the new Mercedes-Benz USA headquarters. Pinnacle has completed several auto dealership brokerage deals in and around metro Atlanta, so we wanted to acknowledge this impressive new corporate campus.
After two years of construction – and at least $93 million in building costs – the new 200,000 sq. ft. Mercedes headquarters is finally complete. Reports indicate the building has a capacity to accommodate over 1,000 employees and sits on a 73-acre site.
The building was designed by renowned global architecture firm, Gensler, so it’s not surprising that the space is absolutely gorgeous. Just look at these photos …
Construction of the new headquarters took 425,000 man hours and more than 1,000 workers. The building consists of 14,000 cubic yards of concrete, 1,500 tons of steel, and 1.6 acres of glass.
Building amenities include a coffee bar complete with in-house barista, a restaurant that serves locally sourced ingredients, a 5,000 square foot fitness center with trainers, an on-site child care facility with four classrooms and an outdoor playground, and a furnished roof deck which serves as an outdoor collaboration space. Plus, a nature trail encircles the building to provide an outdoor campus feel and more than 780 trees were planted.
From this long list of features you can see that when Mercedes builds something, they think of everything, and that’s part of why we enjoy working with Mercedes dealerships for sale – from what we’ve seen, it seems that the leadership, attention to detail, and processes that come from the top down keep Mercedes dealerships running efficiently.
Daimler (the parent company of Mercedes-Benz USA) also intends to establish a global technology incubator called Lab1886 in Atlanta. Lab1886 will help drive innovation by combining a big corporation’s expertise and know-how with the spirit of a startup. The Atlanta location will open in the summer of 2018 and joins existing incubators in Beijing, Berlin, and Stuttgart.
Here at Pinnacle, we read a lot of industry publications and have been following this move by Mercedes from New Jersey to Georgia for several years. Industry reports indicate Mercedes-Benz USA president and CEO, Dietmar Exler, was very hands on with the transition, and he sees the new Atlanta campus as a highpoint in the company’s quest to “enable a creative, innovative, and empowered workforce.”
The headquarters building incorporates environmentally-friendly features such as water reduction using drip irrigation and energy efficient mechanical systems to target LEED Silver Certification. In the interest of eliminating food waste, Mercedes is partnering with Second Helpings Atlanta Inc., an organization which rescues surplus food from Metro Atlanta businesses and delivers to those in need.
Also, to align with the Mercedes’ commitment to sustainability, the new headquarters facility is implementing several alternative transportation initiatives including flex scheduling to reduce the traffic impact, a dedicated MARTA shuttle for employees, bike racks, and electric vehicle charging stations. (A car manufacturer supporting public transportation and bicycling – isn’t that a welcome change?)
